Es ergeht ihnen nicht besser als Matty und Graham, die durch ihre Wahrnehmungen hineingezogen werden in eine Geschichte, in der sich Geschichte und Gegenwart mischen. Während sie die Neugier auf den Spuren eines Soldaten, der ehemals in ihrem Haus gefangen gehalten wurde, in die Vergangenheit treibt, wird ihr Vater in der Gegenwart zum Opfer eines Racheaktes. Es ist kein klares und einfaches Buch, die Bösen sind einst selbst Opfer gewesen, die Helden haben keine beruhigenden Wunderkräfte, sondern nur ihre Ehrlichkeit und ihre Neugierde und die Vergangenheit ist von der Gegenwart auf seltsame Weise nicht weit entfernt. Solch ein Buch kann keinesfalls so gut enden wie andere. Zwar ist am Schluss auf den ersten Blick alles wieder gut, aber nichts ist mehr so, wie es war — und nicht einmal die Frage, ob das gut ist oder schlecht, ist ganz klar. Die Leser werden nicht umhin kommen, ein wenig über die Geschichte des Krieges zu lernen, ein kleines Stichwortverzeichnis hilft denen, die sich bisher wenig damit beschäftigt haben. Und sie werden nicht umhin kommen, sich Gedanken zu machen über Werte wie Offenheit, Verantwortung und Vertrauen. Doch der Aufwand wird sich lohnen — die Leser müssen sich, so will es der Autor und er schafft es — selbst ein Bild machen.
